Ian McHarg and the Genesis of Urban Ecology

The Scottish Ecological Design Association (SEDA) invites attendees to the 4th Howard Liddell Memorial Lecture held at the University of Edinburgh.

The evening will involve a talk about Ian McHarg – a Scottish Landscape Architect and writer on regional planning using natural systems. Born in Clydebank in 1920 McHarg went on to found the department of landscape architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. His 1969 book Design with Nature pioneered the concept of ecological planning and remains a seminal book on landscape architecture and land-use planning.

The talk will present McHarg’s thoughts and ideas about ecological planning, including some in his own inimitable words, and look at some of the best contemporary practice in Urban Ecology.

As in previous years, this will be an enlightening and enervating evening illustrating the best ecological thinking, and why it is needed now more than ever. The event will strengthen the strong impetus for environmental change and innovation in Scotland.
